Science Open Day: Scientists and communities putting ecology into action

Science Open Day, Nov 20
Sunday 20 November marks the launch of the ERA2016 Conference. The Science Open Day provides community members, volunteer coordinators and educators the opportunity to showcase their projects and network with young researchers, established scientists, environmental managers. Likewise science and management professionals are given the chance to learn about on ground restoration and environmental restoration from a practitioners point of view as well as present their own research – in 3 minutes only!

Restoration Roundup
11:00am – 12:15pm, Arena Room
Running concurrently to the Communities and Co-management stream is the Restoration Roundup session. Community groups from around New Zealand engaged in restoration will discuss their projects in lightening talk format: 5 mins + 2 mins questions. Themes covered will include project establishment, restoration successes and barriers.

Snapshot Science
14:15pm – 15:15pm, Arena Room
This science communication challenge has been taken up by 16 presenters who only have 3 minutes each in which to enlighten the audience! Presenters have so far chosen song, video, animation and powerpoint as some of the ways to share their conservation challenges, philosophies on restoration and quirky research.

Ask the Experts
15:55pm – 17:10pm, Arena Room
Participants are free to come and go during this free format session – it’s open to anyone who has questions they want answers to. Experts in soils, insects, bird translocations, pest and weed control, community engagement, citizen science, sourcing funding, wetland restoration, managing data (and more!) will be available to speak to. Tables/spaces will be set up with an expert at each with so that individuals or clusters of participants can engage in discussions to help progress their own projects/research. It will also be a great opportunity for participants to grow their own restoration networks.
